Banchory has been known for its beautiful scenery and good climate for many years. The Dee Sanatorium was built in Banchory because the dry sunny climate was considered ideal for the treatment of tuberculosis. Banchory was the location for Somerset Maughan's short story "Sanatorium" which he wrote while staying in the Nordrach-on-Dee Sanatorium in 1917, now the Glen O'Dee Hospital.
The Town offers a wide range of local specialist shops and a number of tearoooms and coffee shops providing personal service and the best of local produce.
While you are here, don't forget to take a short walk to the Bridge of Feugh, a popular spot for looking for salmon leaping as they make their way upstream to spawn. The bridge and the adjacent toll house were built in the 1790s. Or if you are feeling a bit more energetic, take a walk up Scolty Hill to Scolty Tower, Banchory's famous landmark. The Tower was built in memory of General William Burnett who fought along with Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars. On a clear day there are some fantastic views of Banchory, Feuchside, Aberdeen and the Cairngorms from the top of the Tower.
