North Of Scotland Pipe Band Championship
In 2014, looking to bring to Banchory an important event to help tourism and local businesses, Banchory & District Initiative (BDI) and Banchory Business Association (BBA) combined forces. Authorisation from the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association was then secured, and with the help from the local NE branch, plans were put in place to host the first event which took place in May 2015 in the KGV park.
The event attracted 15 bands and, despite the rather damp weather, was widely acclaimed by all as a great success. The event grew in subsequent years and now offers a wide range of food stalls, a craft marquee, beer tent and children’s entertainment. Apart from the British and World Championships, the Banchory event has become the largest and most sought-after Pipe Band competition in the North of Scotland as well as one of the biggest events in Banchory.
Sadly, the championship was put on hold in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid but returned last year, stronger than ever, with 40 performances from bands across Scotland. Plans are well underway for the 2023 event which will take place on Sunday 14th May.
No event of such size would be possible without the help of several local sponsors who have backed the event from its inception; a massive thank you to our Chieftain and all who have helped and volunteered in the past. New blood is always good and anyone wishing to help organise the event or sponsor are warmly welcomed. For information contact Paul Panchaud at Paul.Panchaud@aol.com
